Russell Fredrick

I am sorry to announce that Rus Fredrick passed away on 6/20/2018 after a long bout of illness.

Rus was a LTJG while in VP40 from 1956-1958. 
He had many fiends in our group and will be missed by us all.

RUSSELL'S OBITUARY
Russell E. Fredrick, 84, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at Columbus Health & Rehab, Columbus, WI. He was born on July 28, 1933, in Columbus, WI to Reuben and Lavina (Biel) Fredrick. He graduated from Columbus High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Naval Postgraduate School. He was married to Peggy Owen on Feb. 11, 1956, in Columbus. Russ was a retired Captain in the U.S. Navy, serving as the Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron One, VP-1, and as a pilot in VP-40 and VP-21. Flew with the Royal Air Force trainivar link = document.getElementById('link2736');link.onclick = function(){document.location = link.getAttribute('href');} ng pilots in Scotland and served diplomatically as the Naval Attache to Yugoslavia and Romania. After 27 years in the Navy, he became a successful businessman with Allied Signal/Bendix/Honeywell and an active community philanthropist. Russ and Peggy returned to Columbus in December, 1994. He worked tirelessly for the Columbus Community Hospital as a member of the Board of Directors and Hospital Foundation Board for nine years each, spent two years as Police and Fire Commissioner, presided as President for the Columbus-Fall River Rotary Club and Assistant Governor for the Rotary district while leading fundraising for the new community poolvar link = document.getElementById('link2736');link.onclick = function(){document.location = link.getAttribute('href');} in Columbus. He was especially active at the Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ. Survivors include one daughter, Pat (Mike) Turba of Platteville; two sons, Rolf (Mary), Campton Hills, Illinois, and Drew (Lisa), Knoxville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren, Tim (Ellie) Turba, John Turba, Tracy Turba, Amy Fredrick, Ryan Fredrick, Kevin Fredrick, Karen Fredrick, Carl Fredrick and Jack Fredrick; five great-grandchildren, Lyndsay, Kaitlyn, Daniel, Justin and Matthew Turba; a sister-in-law, Sally Owen; and a nephew, Jeff Van Allen. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a sister, Jeanne Berg, and niece Cheri Van Allen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., with visitation beginning at 9:00 A.M., on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ, Columbus. Rev. Sandra Schieble will officiate. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus with full military honors. Memorials may be directed to the Olivet Church Endowment Fund or the Columbus Area Endowment.
